First Nations Outreach Community Consultation Coordinator/Event Coordinator Intern
Position Summary: The Sioux Lookout Anti-Racism Committee (SLARC) is a dynamic non-profit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors dedicated to positive community race relations. This internship is funded by Industry Canada’s FedNor program and other funds. Reporting to the Business Manager, the Intern manages events, identifies funding and partnership opportunities, writes grant proposals and reports, communicates with the media, and assists with SLARC’s community consultation.
Duration: This is a full-time (35 hrs/wk) one-year contract position.
Qualifications: FedNor requires that the candidate have graduated from an accredited college or university within the last three years. Requirements of the position with SLARC: • Experience or interest in working toward improved race relations in a cross-cultural environment • Ability to work independently and effectively • Total competence in written and spoken English • Fluency in Anishiniimowin (Ojibway, Cree or Oji-Cree) an asset • Proven research skills • Excellent organization skills, research, written and computer skills are required • Understanding of historic and contemporary issues affecting First Nations people • Familiarity with Sioux Lookout community, Lac Seul community, and northern First Nations communities an asset
Duties and Responsibilities: • Grant Writing o Research government and foundation funders and work with the Business Manager in developing funding proposals to appropriate programs • Event Management o Work with advisory committees, volunteers and staff organizing SLARC in the Summer (National Day of Healing and Reconciliation, May 26; National Aboriginal Day, June 21; Bannock Bake-Off and Sioux Mountain Festival, early August 2008) and Race Relations Week (March 2009) • Communications o Draft media releases and work with the Business Manager in executing SLARC’s newly drafted Communications Strategy. Media interviews with print, radio and television media will also be expected • Community Consultation o Work with SLARC’s Partnership Development Committee (made up of Business Manager & Board members, community and Chamber of Commerce representatives) in wide scale community consultation being planned, targeting First Nations leaders, First Nations organizations, and the business community. • Other tasks as dictated by need, opportunity or Intern’s interests
Salary: $27,200/annum
