Casual Support Workers

The Casual Support Worker is required to work 12 hour shifts (6am-6pm and 6pm-6am), with availability during the week and on weekends.  The Casual Support Worker should be available for shifts on short notice, when requested, as well as scheduled shift coverage. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. To ensure the care and safety of all house residents. This includes the responsibility to provide the resident with the information and support that she requires in order to make her own, independent decisions and choices in a non-judgmental, non-denominating setting.

  2. To complete admissions, referrals and discharges of residents.

  3. To provide effective service and assistance to meet the needs of the residents.

  4. To be aware of fire safety and security procedures and ensure they are implemented at all times.

  5. To co-ordinate and supervise in-house activities and to supervise and assist with meal preparation and housekeeping duties.

  6. To answer the crisis call telephone lines and respond to the calls as required.

  7. To answer the business telephone line and door in accordance with house policies.

  8. To advocate on behalf of the resident as requested.

  9. To maintain confidentiality of resident, staff, volunteer and organization information in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and in accordance with house policies.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. To engage in regular supervision with the Team Leader and/or Executive Director, including and annual job performance review.

  2. Adhere to the policies, systems and procedures of the organization.

  3. To participate in staff meetings and staff training sessions as requested.

  4. To keep a daily log of shift activities.

  5. To record/document the appropriate resident information.

  6. Other duties as may be assigned by the Team Leader and/or Executive Director.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:

  1. The Casual Support Worker is responsible to the Team Leader and/or Executive Director for all job specific responsibilities.

2.   When working a shift where the Team Leader and/or Executive Director is not immediately available, the Support Worker will report to the designated On-Call Worker.

 

EVALUATION:

  1. The Support Worker will be on probation for a period of six (6) months, at which time a performance evaluation will be completed by the Team Leader and/or Executive Director. Evaluations thereafter will be completed on an annual basis.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.                  Concern for abused women and children.

2.                  Awareness of the issues surrounding violence against women.

3.                  Cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity.

4.                  Ability to work cooperatively, independently and as part of a team.

5.                  Experience and a knowledge of the skills required for crisis intervention.

6.                  Good communication skills, both written and verbal. The ability to assist over the telephone and provide information to people in a crisis and emergency situations both on the telephone and in person.

7.                  Fluency in a Native Language would be a definite asset.

8.              Experience/training/education or equivalent training and/or demonstrated skills or knowledge in the human/social services field would be an asset.

9.                  Experience as an advocate and in working with various agencies and businesses over the telephone.

10.              Ability to work with minimum supervision.

11.              Skills in the areas of problem solving, coordination of multiples activities, decision making, conflict resolution, delivering difficult messages, suicide intervention and parenting would be an asset.
